The Student Campus is designed for college students, in the early stages of their career development, who are interested in learning more about the changing world of journalism. The students participate in intensive training, tours, mock press conferences and career-building exercises in classrooms, television studios, media outlets, the streets and neighborhoods of Orlando, and government or other types of institutions. The program, also features workshops and seminars on journalism ethics, obtaining newsroom internships, how to make the most out of the networking experience at the NAHJ Convention, and on various ways to write a good story in this age of multimedia journalism.
The journalism educators and professionals leading the program offer the students a real perspective on the working world of journalism today and help them gain awareness of their respective communities. The 2½-3 day session takes place just before the convention and ends right when the convention starts so participants can fully avail themselves of the training and networking the conference has to offer. This program is geared to students who are early in their career development, mostly freshmen and sophomores, and those who have not had their first journalism internship.
About the Student Projects
A dozen aspiring journalists will work side by side with professionals and mentors to produce solid and innovative journalism primarily online in the Latino Reporter Digital. On the website, the students will primarily be covering the convention and other media-related and Latino-community themes while learning and using the latest techniques in multimedia journalism. Latinoreporterdigital.com is seeking Web-savvy young journalists who can combine reporting and multimedia experience to cover the 2011 NAHJ Convention in a fast-paced newsroom.
Latinoreporterdigital.com will be the prime source of news and information about this gathering for convention participants and online users across the country and the world and it will be generated in English and Spanish by students in their roles as reporters, photographers, producers, and multimedia and backpack journalists. Applicants with experience in social media, video, photography and/or online reporting are highly encouraged to apply.
