Assignment Desk Assistant (Posted 2/10/11)
KHOU-TV, a Belo-owned station, is looking for an individual to work part-time on the newsroom assignment desk. The selected candidate will be responsible for gathering news and assigning crews.

Additional responsibilities include the ability to monitor police and fire scanners for breaking news; having good news judgment to evaluate possible stories sent to us by e-mail and phone; helping to plan for major events and upcoming stories and assisting reporters in developing and setting up their stories. The candidate needs to be creative, organized and good at details. The position requires a good communicator who can keep managers, news producers and KHOU.com well-informed of breaking news and other changes.

A minimum of six months experience on a TV newsroom assignment desk is preferred and the ability to work flexible shifts is required. A college degree is preferred.

SALES

Account Executive (Posted 2/25/11)
KHOU-TV, CBS affiliate in Houston, Texas, is seeking an Account Executive. The selected candidate must possess the ability to create revenue through new business development, possess the creative and analytic ability to market to consumers through multiple screens and media platforms, practice accountability, be process oriented, self-driven, optimistic, articulate, and possess exceptional presentation skills.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for developing new station revenue through the creation of new client development.
  • Responsible for marketing and selling advertising across various media platforms to all client categories.
  • Works internally between departments, among peer station sales executives, and ancillary department staff to foster innovative thinking, relationships and station revenue.
  • Utilizes the internal and external sales tools, consultant training and guidance provided to build station revenue and personal wealth.
  • Ability to be assertive and intuitive in capitalizing on existing and new business opportunities.
  • Demonstrates a creativeness in building revenue-generating ideas that produce and generate a measurable return on investment for station clients.
  • Negotiates media business to both existing and new transactional station clients.
  • Creates and maintains records for all client communication within the station’s client data base management system.
  • Ability to successfully achieve the assigned and agreed upon individual revenue goals.
  • Adhere to and build upon the Belo values and the KHOU Brand.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS

  • College degree preferred.
  • Minimum of two years sales experience strongly preferred.
  • Must be highly organized and efficient in time management.
  • Must be competent in the usage and operating of computers and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Self driven, motivated and results oriented.

TECHNICAL OPERATIONS

Maintenance Engineer (Posted 3/4/11)
Belo owned KHOU-TV, CBS 10th market network affiliate is seeking a broadcast engineer to maintain studios, master control, and assist with repair and preventative maintenance of all other equipment in the broadcast facility. Baseline educational requirements include an Associates Degree in electronic technology or technical school. Must be self motivated, precise, and be able to work various shifts. An SBE certification in television is optional but preferred. Individual must be familiar with all broadcast related FCC rules and regulations.

The candidate must have 3 years broadcast television maintenance experience and must have maintained ENG and studio cameras. Must have an engineering background that would include the repair and preventative maintenance of Sony broadcast video tape players. Must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the electronics of SDTV and HDTV television formats. A solid working knowledge of the maintenance and operations of broadcast equipment such as: digital video, microwave, satellite systems, broadcast distribution and interconnect systems that include: fiber, telephone, LAN, WAN, serial data, and remote control telemetry. Candidate must have or obtain a valid Texas drivers license.

INTERNSHIPS: KHOU-TV is now accepting applications for paid summer internships for the following departments: News, Weather, and WEB (KHOU.com)

If you’re a junior or senior in college, and would like a paid intern with Houston’s best News team, this is your chance! KHOU is committed to hiring interns from colleges and accredited universities and potentially integrate them into our workforce in the future. Internships offer everyone an opportunity to see if they are interested in pursuing a career in broadcast journalism, in multiple capacities. All of our interns receive the benefit of being assigned a mentor. Our mentors will provide a learning partnership with our interns, and teach them all there is to know about the fascinating world of television. The mentor will provide a platform to develop passion, skills and experience.

Depending on the department of interest, interns may assist with:

News: Understanding and writing topical, broadcast-style scripts; learning to build a newscast from start to finish; using appropriate video and graphics; and working various departments within the newsroom.

Weather: Maintaining a local climatological and hurricane database; entering data for the preparation of on-air graphics; monitoring content on khou.com and data from weather and traffic cameras; must possess a general knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word as well as a fundamental knowledge of using Internet search engines; must have a general interest and enthusiasm for weather.

Web: Updating the web with fresh content; posting video to the web; creating photo slideshows; taking photos at community events for slideshows; and learning how to publish to the web platform

Great Day Houston: Assisting producers with segments for our live morning show; hands-on opportunity to work with the production staff in preparation for the show and special events
