Position: Public Relations/Marketing Coordinator
Reports To: Executive Director of Communications
The Communications Department at the GHCVB is dedicated to spreading the positive image of Houston to visitors, media and key stakeholders in the meetings industry through marketing, advertising, public relations and website management. The Public Relations/Marketing Coordinator will be responsible for internal and external communications, media relations and travel & tourism public relations for Houston’s official marketing, tourism and sales organization. Whether it’s a new marketing initiative, a new office opening, a consumer travel feature, a major event in Houston or a public affairs issue that will affect the vitality of Houston’s visitor industry, the Public Relations/Marketing Coordinator will be involved in every step.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with consumer travel, travel trade, and meetings trade journalists from around the U.S. to promote the greater Houston area and the work of the GHCVB.
- Develop and pitch travel story ideas for visiting journalists and for those who cover the travel and tourism industry as their beat.
- Create and maintain media distribution lists.
- Plan and coordinate domestic media itineraries (both individual and group) for on-the-ground press familiarization trips.
- Work directly with the city’s hospitality industry and local community partners to highlight new products to the visiting media and to create promotional packages for giveaways.
- Responsible for daily oversight of the GHCVB Web site, which includes updating calendar of events, the online media room, promotions, GHCVB collateral and microsites.
- Assist with the development of a social media platform, as well as help manage current social media, including Facebook, Twitter and Ask Veronica.
- Write copy for press releases, marketing collateral, feature stories, web content and newsletters.
- Act as editor of the monthly Houston consumer e-newsletter that is sent to over 45,000 visitors, meeting planners, media and tour operators.
- When needed, be capable of giving on-camera and phone interviews to media.
- Manage ongoing internal marketing projects such as, On-Hold Voice Messaging and Houston Sales and Marketing Update.
- Manage the development and functionality of Houston Interactive Map.
- Acting PR liaison for the Houston International Protocol Alliance, which includes handling media relations for the Learn at Lunch series and other Protocol news and programs.
- Support Communications Department on overall marketing and advertising programs designed to drive tourism and convention business to Houston, such as the My Houston campaign, Houston Culinary Tours, Annual Meeting, Taxi Rally Day and client events.
- Travel with Bureau staff when necessary to tradeshows, media missions, press conferences and conventions.
- When needed, represent the Communications Department at various meetings and functions.
- Work with internal departments on communication needs and external contacts such as artists, photographers, video suppliers, and communications-related vendors to accomplish necessary projects; learn the GHCVB bidding process.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or related field from a four-year college or university.
- Three to five years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
- Portfolio that demonstrates strong writing skills, with experience in writing solid and effective press materials.
- Strong familiarity with the greater Houston area and all its offerings.
- Excellent time management skills, demonstrating ability to deliver multiple projects on time.
Job Grade: 14 – Exempt Position
Base Salary: Commensurate with experience and skills
